Minnesota February Garden Guide

It’s already February and we are closer to indoor seed sowing season! I start a few vegetables and flowers early this month such as onions, celery, and pansies. Now is a good time to order pepper and tomato seeds as they will need to be started in the next 4-6 weeks. Days are getting longer, and we are now 47 days until spring. Enjoy this last month of winter by embracing it with nature.

  • Start milk jug greenhouses to grow many types of annuals, perennials, herbs, and veggies
  • Send someone you love roses for Valentines Day
  • Construct a cold frame to sow early season crops like cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts
  • Host a Super Bowl chili pot luck party – Here is my recipe for Spicy Beef Chili , it is so good!
  • Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
  • Late winter is a great time for pruning certain trees and shrubs, for more information read the link below from the University of Minnesota Extension Winter is a good time to prune trees and shrubs | UMN Extension
  • Think about starting a new bee lawn or rain garden
  • Take pictures of wildlife in your yard
  • Fertilize houseplants with a weak treatment towards end of month as daylight really increases
  • Check out garden books from the library
  • Learn a new homesteading skill
  • Set up an indoor seed starting station and clean gear
  • Draw out final garden plans with some new colored pencils
  • Make a list of herbs and vegetables to grow for preservation
  • Spend 30 minutes outdoors daily
