Minnesota March Garden Guide

We made it through winter northern climate gardeners! Next week is the Minnesota state boys high school hockey tournament, which is a holiday itself for our puck playing family. Spring is just around the corner and indoor seed sowing starts this month for many vegetables such as peppers and cabbage. March can be cold, mild, snowy, windy, and rainy with teases of spring. It is still too cold to do any in-ground planting, so pick up some seed packets and get started indoors. We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month along with the season of Lent. Grab a Guinness and attend a Friday night fish fry at a local church. Before we know it Twins baseball will be back on TV, colorful spring bulbs will make their appearance, and the smell of backyard BBQ’s will float through the air.

  • Seeds to start this month: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, head lettuces, and peppers.
  • Prune trees and shrubs. Do not prune any spring flowering shrubs, such as lilacs and azaleas
  • Check on bird feeders, clean and fill with fresh food
  • Fertilize houseplants
  • Turn compost if possible
  • Sketch detailed garden plans
  • Attend the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show: March 5-9, 2025
  • Order baby chicks
  • Take a garden class offered by the Master Gardener program
  • Make a list of vegetables and fruit you want to preserve
  • Set a goal to walk in nature 30 minutes a day
  • On a warm day clean out shed/garage and take inventory of tools
  • Plan to add a few native plants to your landscape
  • Take a walk around your garden with a notebook and jot down areas that need improvement
  • Avoid soil compaction and do not walk on lawns yet
  • Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and buy yourself a Shamrock plant (Oxalis)
