Minnesota January Garden Guide 2025

Welcome to 2025!

In Minnesota the ground is covered in snow and temperatures rarely go above freezing. Outdoor yard and garden chores are limited to shoveling snow, taking care of the chickens, and maintaining the backyard pond for hockey. Don’t let the short gray days stop you from enjoying nature and participating in your favorite hobby. Here is a list of ways I stay connected to my garden and nature during the month of January.

  • Browse seed catalogs and order your favorite vegetables and flowers
  • Draw out summer garden plans for plant placement
  • Make lists of early spring to-dos
  • Bird watch and feed the wildlife
  • Visit a greenhouse or nursery
  • Start a 2025 garden journal
  • Read a garden book or magazine
  • Cook a meal with fresh herbs
  • Start some kitchen sprouts or microgreens
  • Take a nature walk in the woods
  • Photograph the winter landscape
  • Evaluate your space for new garden plots
  • Buy a new houseplant
  • Check indoor plants for pests, drainage issues, monitor moisture, and adjust plant placement if necessary.
  • Take a horticulture course
  • Collect milk jugs and start winter mini greenhouses
  • Make a winter foraged deck planter
  • Shop at a Farmer’s Market
  • Gaze at the January full moon: The Wolf Moon on January 13th
  • Look through your garden photos from previous seasons
  • Keep a vase full of fresh flowers in the house

Take this month to enjoy the beauty of our snow-covered winter landscape. Aim to spend at least 30 minutes outdoors each day (weather permitting) and embrace the stillness of nature while she rests for another 6-8 weeks. Use this month to prepare for the next upcoming season and set goals for improvement. Consider adding a bee lawn, natives, or a new pollinator garden into your existing landscape. Only 64 days until spring!
